Think Slavery has been abolished? Think again
27,000,000 people in this world have their lives and livelihoods held under the thumbs of others. We can call them indentured workers or domestic servants, but they are held in bondage to another. That is slavery. According to Free The Slaves organization, every country around the world has made it illegal to ‘own’ another person, yet it continues to happen. On each continent and in almost every country there are documented cases of human trafficking, yet it doesn’t stop. Parents sell children in hopes for a better life when they can no longer provide for their offspring themselves. The lives they lead are full of abuse and degradation, working 20 hours a day for no pay and little food in conditions most of us would not allow a pet to endure. They are beaten, berated and raped and made to debase themselves in any number of ways.
If you think that you live in a place where that doesn’t happen, you may be surprised.
“…there may be people held in slavery in your community. Slavery happens in nearly every country in the world, and the US and Europe are not immune. Research that Free the Slaves conducted with the University of California, Berkeley found documented cases of slavery and human trafficking in more than 90 cities across the United States.
They are brought in as ‘family’ members to help raise the children of the power couple you so admire. They work the textile factories that make the clothes we put on our backs. They work the fields picking the produce we import into our grocery stores. And we don’t even know it.
While abuse runs rampant in homes across America against our children and our friends, we can add into that those souls who through no choice of their own, are held against their will.
How does slavery continue in this day and age? Simple; just like abuse, whether physical, mental or sexual, as long as people turn a blind eye to what happens under their own noses and those that are put into these situations have no place to turn, it will never end. Educating yourself is the first step. Volunteer at shelters and within organizations that help the downtrodden. If you or someone you know is being abused in ANY way, find someone you can talk to and get help from. Use Xanga if necessary. This is a great community with many people from all walks of life that can steer you in the right direction.
There is no shame in needing help. No one should ever have to live under the thumb of another nor should they have to remain due to fear. We cannot help every person in the world, but if during our lifetime, we can help just one, imagine what an impact that could make.

They arrest groups involved in forced prostitution every year in Seattle. Its a very big problem
I read a story about a young Egyptian girl who was sold by her parents to a wealthy family in the US..she posed as a family member
heres the story
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28415693/
I watched a few movies about human trafficing. Not a pretty sight
Its amazing just how many people don't know this. People are so naive these days.
The only thing I question is them being able to say that every country has abolished slavery; I wonder 1. how they know that and 2. why they believe that's true.
Glad to see other people fighting this good fight.
@trunthepaige - I thought Seattle was supposed to be the enlightened liberal city? Then again, NYC is no different.
I am opposed to anything like this ... how could anybody not be, I wonder.
People are very good at ignoring the things they don't want to face.
Thanks for sharing this; there's a lot of other things that I'm sure we're unaware of as well!
check out onemillioncan.com... there's a cause in there that if you send money, you can add your signature that'll be on a petition the UN to enforce against the International sex slave trade and human traffiking industry...
Now, this is a blog with heart!! Awesome message
And sadly many people (who just think that America would never have something of the sort happen)... Those people that just don't believe that humanity is so cruel... would say that your insane and you make up lies... all lies...
But me... I believe you... All those missing children.. the thousands of people missing within cities alone (most people don't even realize just HOW many people go missing)... if they where all dead... ALL OF THEM... don't you think we stumble over a body more often than we find a live one... Thats because many of them are not dead... they have been abducted... and sent away...
This is a really important issue that not a lot of people pay attention to. Simply because a country has outlawed something like slavery does not mean that it does not exist. Slavery especially with regard to human trafficking is a huge issue that still faces many countries today including the United States.
I agree with you. I have been back to India alot and have seen people being treated like dirt and unable to escape and find a better life for themselves or their family. Me and my brother have recently just sponsored a child from africa. We only give around £5 ( thats around $8) a month but like you said helping just one person is better than helping no1 right? Plus that money is nothing to us just loose change. But it's amazing how much some so little to us can change some1 else's life so much.
The reality of it all is as long as there is rich and poor in this world then there is always going to be slavery.
@JadedJanissary - @ShamelesslyRed - @trunthepaige - @homemadehappiness - So, who would like to free a slave by buying them out of slavery or keep them out of the slave market by sponsoring them so they can get an education, medical care and provide for their daily needs? If you are interested, one group is Central India Christian Mission Although slave aid is not the primary work, they do help in buying slaves back so they can live with their families again. For $15/month you can sponsor a child and make an impact
Hey you can check out a group called "Love 146" (www.love146.org) & donate money to try to buy sex slave children out of their slavery & put them in adoption homes! Thanks for posting this. People need to be aware! *** EVERY minute, 2 children are sold into sex slavery around the world (according to Love 146)!
Don't forget they clean the rooms so that you people trash when you reserved it in a 5 star hotel. Take it for example Silver Mountain located in Kellogg, Idaho. Where instead of hiring locals for at least get a better quality of life, they hire through a "work program" Asians from Thailand and China. Now, it may seem a fair trade, but it's not since they receive 7 dollars an hour when a new employee with benefits is receiving $6.95 an hour. And that's not all, they live under deplorable conditions and these poor kids (who don't speak English most of them) have to pay $70 dollars a day per person for staying while a friend of mine who lives there pays only $450.00 a month. These foreigners have to work over 35 hours a week under contract so they want to work more in order to pay the rent. I used to work there and it was a joke coming there, working hard to then try successfully to kick me out, and I wasn't the only one, three left the job after I left and one has been laid off, to then leave these kids doing these jobs. The reason for doing it, it's because they're losing money, from their health insurance, to employees taking "overtime." I'm back to my old job (minimum wage with no benefits) since two months ago and it's unfortunate that companies instead of helping the community, these greedy bastards hire foreigners who are willing to even get pay under the minimum. That's also slavery! Please, Boycott Silver Mountain specially Morning Star Lodge!
@trunthepaige - Amazing we don't hear about that nationally. @noree_n - There have been quite a few of these stories. It's amazing to realize how many people we'll never know about. @LilSweetJew - No it isn't pretty. @lovechartreuse - The website states where they get their information from and unfortunately I don't remember how they recieved those specifics. @JadedJanissary - It is good, isn't it?
@Loonsounds - I would wonder the same @WalkingaNewPath - Yes they are and this is one of them @homemadehappiness - Thank you for taking the time to read about it. @leadworshipper82@revelife - Thanks for mentioning it. I'll take a look
@ShamelesslyRed - Thank you ma'am! @ImUrKarma - It makes you wonder doesn't it? I know I do. @TheCheshireGrins - Human trafficking is finally getting more notice, but to us we turn a blind eye because they don't think it happens here, when it does. It's easier to ignore it. @meanii - That is a great thing you do. You are right, it is pocket change to you, but it could be helping that person more than you know. Kudos to the two of you for doing that. @jeremiahstears - Thank you for putting this information out there for those that might be interested @MDrabing83 - Thank you for the link. Any information we can put out there might help. @angryflower1 - Another instance of forced labor. Thank you for sharing this information
Although I had already read earlier in my life about this problem, I'm amazed that this atrocity had slipped my mind shortly after and up until now. Slavery must be one of the most dangerous problems in the world, simply because the realization of BEING a slave is similar to having a disability which is created by the mind. The acceptance of having no rights, no hope, no self worth/respect, why, that alone almost takes away any value of being a human being. In most cases, i think its safe to say that while "progress" for mankind is always seen as a positive thing, its a shame when we use other humans as the sacrifice to build that road to progression, whether it's progression of the self or of a community/country/planet/etc
@Nine_Star_Lotus - It's an easy thing to forget unless it happens in your neighborhood on a frequent basis. You have brought up a very interesting concept. We still use others to help pave the way to success
And lets not forget walmart.
we all need to become more aware of these things.
this makes me think of Immigration rules, people without citizienships anywhere, refugees
Slavery is never going to end. If they can't do it legally, they'll do it illegally. Why? Because people are lazy and have no respect for someone who looks/lives differently than they do.
